Giants save some cap space by releasing, re-signing Scott Simonson

The New York Giants made a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday, but one of them stood out above the rest: the shocking release of tight end Scott Simonson.

Word of Simonson’s release caught most by surprise, especially when considering he’s had a solid camp and there are still weeks to go until the start of the regular season. But as it turned out, it was nothing more than some financial housekeeping.

The Giants didn’t announce Simonson’s release and with good reason. At the same moment he was released, he was re-signed.

So why the strange transaction? It’s quite savvy, actually. Dan Duggan of The Athletic explains:

In the end, Simonson still gets his $895,000 in salary, while the Giants save an additional $160,000 against the cap — money they’ll certainly need if injuries continue to pile up.
