Giants’ Saquon Barkley, Evan Engram out vs. Patriots

The New York Giants had hoped to have running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) and tight end Evan Engram (knee) against the New England Patriots on Thursday night in Foxborough, but the short week was too much for the superstars to overcome.

The Giants have announced that both Barkley and Engram are out in Week 6, joining wide receiver Sterling Shepard (concussion) and running back Wayne Gallman (concussion).

On Tuesday, Barkley had indicated his goal was to play on Thursday night and that he anticipated boarding the bus on Wednesday.

“That’s the goal, that’s the mindset that I have. That’s how I’m attacking it every single day, every single week. Getting ready for the Patriots and doing what I can to help my team win,” Barkley told reporters.

With Barkley, Engram, Shepard and Gallman all out, the Giants will be without nearly 60% of their offensive production on the season to date.

Rhett Ellison is expected to start in place of Engram, while rookie Jon Hilliman and fullback Eli Penny will take on Barkley and Gallman’s carries.

Meanwhile, veteran Golden Tate will start in Shepard’s place and likely see an increased number of snaps from the slot.

Finally, linebacker Lorenzo Carter (neck) has been listed as questionable.
