Giants’ Sam Beal, Mark McLaurin added to list of walking wounded

Editor’s Note: The Giants corrected the injury report on Sam Beal on Sunday, saying he suffered a hamstring injury, not a groin injury.

The New York Giants have had rough go the first three days of training camp. The big news, of course, is the pending suspension of wide receiver Golden Tate, who claims he accidentally took a fertility drug that contained a substance banned by the NFL.

But the injuries have been mounting as well as the team completed their first padded practice of the season. Going into Saturday’s session, the Giants have seen their wide receiving corps experience a rash of injuries that had most shaken their heads.

Sterling Shepard fractured his thumb and is questionable for the season opener. Corey Coleman tore his ACL and is gone for the season. Rookie Darius Slayton is dealing with a hamstring strain. Brittan Golden has a groin issue and Alex Wesley opened camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

That’s not to mention the several players who have cramped up from the heat and had to seek attention inside the facility.

On Saturday, rookie safety Mark McLaurin from Mississippi State, a contender for a roster spot, left practice after having his foot stepped on. Second-year cornerback Sam Beal was sidelined with a groin injury.

Beal missed all of his rookie season in 2019 with a shoulder injury. He is in a battle for playing time with two players from this year’s draft class (Deandre Baker and Julian Love) and last year’s surprise slot corner, Grant Haley.

Every team goes through injuries but the Giants, who came into training camp with a fresh attitude after an offseason of tumultuous change, were hoping to have an event-free start to the season. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened.
