Giants’ Rod Smith exits Bengals game with groin injury

New York Giants running back Rod Smith suffered a groin injury in the first half Thursday’ preseason game versus the Cincinnati Bengals and will not return.

Smith had eight yards on five carries in the game, but did score a touchdown.

Smith, signed as a free agent this past May by the Giants, began his career in Seattle as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State in 2015 and spent the next four seasons in Dallas.

Smith is in a tight competition for a backup role behind Saquon Barkley along with Wayne Gallman, Paul Perkins and rookie Jon Hilliman.
