Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is true to his word.
Shurmur said at his news conference on Friday that he wanted to keep some of the current Giants assistants on his staff and on Sunday he did just that.
Running backs coach Craig Johnson will return in the same role and assistant offensive line coach Lunda Wells will become the team's new tight ends coach, a source confirmed to the New York Daily News.
"I don't think you need to sweep the whole place clean," Shurmur said on Friday. "There's some really good coaches here, and I want to first keep them."
Johnson is a veteran coach of 18 years in the NFL and has been the Giants' running backs coach since 2014, under Tom Coughlin.
Wells was also hired by Coughlin and has been on the Giants coaching staff for six years, spending the last five years as the assistant offensive line coach.
Johnson and Wells join Giants linebackers coach Bill McGovern as the only assistants from the Ben McAdoo era to return, thus far.
Shurmur hired James Bettcher as defensive coordinator last week and filled out the rest of the defensive staff, but he is still searching for an offensive coordinator, as well as a quarterbacks and offensive line coach.
He indicated at his news conference that there are some coaches he cannot talk to yet, which could be interpreted as someone from the staff of the Eagles, where he has plenty of connections. Shurmur could also bring in Kevin Stefanski, his quarterbacks coach with the Vikings, should Stefanski not replace Shurmur as offensive coordinator in Minnesota.
"There's other guys we're looking at outside the building that are, number one, career coaches, outstanding teachers, communicators, and so we're looking for those type people," Shurmur said. "Some of them are currently not quite available, but we'll make sure we get a staff full of guys that can inspire our players."
