The New York Giants re-signed center Jon Halapio last week after extending him an exclusive rights free agent tender offer, and by all accounts, he will return in 2019 as their starter.
But as last season proved, it never hurts to have some depth or competition.
Accordingly, Field Yates of ESPN reports the Giants will also re-sign center Spencer Pulley, who had replaced Halapio after he suffered a fractured ankle, to a three-year deal.
An undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt in 2016, Pulley played in all 32 games as a member of the Chargers before being awarded to the Giants off of waivers last September.
The 6-foot-4 and 308-pound Pulley initially sat behind John Greco following Halapio’s injury, but that was short-lived. Pulley, who appeared in 13 games for the Giants, started the final nine games of the season at center.
Pulley was a college teammate of Pat Shurmur’s son, Kyle, who had been the starting quarterback at Vanderbilt and will enter the 2019 NFL Draft in April.
Pulley was slated to become a restricted free agent, so the three-year deal is a bit of a surprise. The $9.6 million is also somewhat surprising considering he’s slated to remain a backup.
