Giants re-sign safety Sean Chandler to practice squad

The New York Giants waived safety Sean Chandler earlier this week in order to make room for sophomore cornerback Sam Beal, who was activated from injured reserve after missing the first half of the season with a shoulder injury.

However, Chandler didn’t have to go far and never bothered to clear out his locker, knowing he’d likely be back in East Rutherford in short order if not claimed off of waivers.

Unsurprisingly, Chandler went unclaimed and was immediately signed back to the team’s practice squad on Wednesday.

In order to clear space for Chandler’s spot on the practice squad, the Giants terminated the contract of punter Sean Smith, who was signed last week in an effort to help the team prepare for punter Chris Jones in Week 9 — the Dallas Cowboys’ left-footed punter.

Chandler, who signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie out of Temple following the 2018 NFL Draft, was a surprise addition to the 53-man roster a year ago and certainly had some flashes. In 25 career games, he’s recorded 23 tackles, one sack, one pass defensed and one fumble recovery.
