Giants protect QB Brian Lewerke, three others

The New York Giants announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 6 game with the Los Angeles Rams and, to the surprise of no one, quarterback Brian Lewerke was one of the four.

The 24-year-old Lewerke, who was originally signed in mid-August, is an important piece for the Giants this week.

Starting quarterback Daniel Jones is likely to miss Sunday’s game with a concussion and Mike Glennon is the only other quarterback on the active roster. In the event Jones is inactive, Lewerke will be elevated on gameday and serve as QB2. Punter Riley Dixon will serve as the emergency QB3.

In addition to Lewerke, the Giants also protected offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, defensive tackle David Moa and wide receiver Dante Pettis.

Pettis was a second-time addition to the protection list a week ago, while Cunningham and Moa had all been protected previously. For Cunningham, he has now been protected four weeks in a row. Moa has been protected in all six weeks this season.

Given the Giants’ injuries at wide receiver, it’s likely that Pettis will join Lewerke as a gameday elevation.
