Giants projected to have two compensatory picks in 2020 NFL Draft

The window of free agency that impacts future compensatory picks has officially come and gone, essentially setting in stone the formula for each team in the 2020 NFL Draft.

While the NFL will not announce the compensatory picks until next year (playing time in 2019 can still factor in), the early projections are complete and for the New York Giants, they are on pace to land two additional picks in 2020.

Lance Zierlein of NFL Network currently projects the Giants to land third-round and seventh-round compensatory picks in next year’s draft.

NEW YORK GIANTS

Projected compensatory picks: One in Round 3; one in Round 7.
Key free-agent losses: Landon Collins (Redskins); Jamon Brown (Falcons).
Key free-agent additions: Golden Tate (Eagles); Markus Golden (Cardinals).
Comp-pick analysis: The Giants’ comp-pick scenario seems pretty clear-cut, with the Landon Collins departure landing them a third-rounder and Mario Edwards’ move to the Saints netting a seventh-rounder. The additions of Golden Tate and Markus Golden cancel out the departures of Jamon Brown and B.W. Webb (Bengals).

Given that the NFL awards just 32 compensatory picks per year, it’s possible that the Giants lose their pick in Round 7 if the formula dictates another team or teams come in ahead of them.

Also, it’s worth noting that Over The Cap has the Giants projected with a total of four compensatory picks in 2020 NFL Draft, and they weren’t far off this past year.

Either way, the additional third-round pick is a gem for the Giants and general manager, who had just a fifth-round compensatory pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, which was used to select Auburn wide receiver Darius Slayton.
