Giants Poised to Hire Padres’ Bob Melvin as Manager, per Report

The Giants are expected to name Padres manager Bob Melvin as their new manager, The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly reports.

Melvin has spent the past two seasons in San Diego, leading the Padres to an NLCS appearance last season before a disappointing 2023 campaign. The veteran will be set to manage his fifth team, having also managed the Mariners, Diamondbacks and Athletics.

In 20 years as a manager, Melvin has won over 1,500 games, including 853 with Oakland, which is the second most in franchise history.

San Francisco fired Gabe Kapler a few days before the season ended, ending Kapler’s four-year tenure with the team. Melvin will be Giants president Farhan Zaidi’s second manager, and the two have familiarity having spent time together in Oakland from 2011 to ’14.

San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin is reportedly expected to take the job with the San Francisco Giants.

The Giants reportedly interviewed a wide variety of candidates including Alyssa Nakken, Kai Correa and Stephen Vogt.

The Padres will be on their fourth manager in the last six years and seventh manager since A.J. Preller became general manager in 2014. San Diego was one of the more disappointing teams in the league last season, winning just 82 games a year after making the NLCS.
