Giants’ Pat Shurmur: We kept Alex Tanney for behind the scenes value

One of the more puzzling moves the New York Giants made (or didn’t make) this past weekend centered around their choice of who will fill the No. 3 spot at quarterback.

Head coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Dave Gettleman decided to cut ties with last year’s fourth round draft pick, Kyle Lauletta, and stick with unproven journeyman Alex Tanney even though it was clear to all that Lauletta was the much better player.

The things behind the scenes that Alex does well is not get jammed up by law enforcement, something Lauletta regretfully did last year when he disregarded traffic patterns on I-495 and almost ran down a cop.

It looks like the Giants would rather have Tanney around young Danny Dimes than Lauletta, who has now moved on to the practice squad of the hated Philadelphia Eagles.

When it comes down to it, if the Giants ever had to have Tanney or Lauletta play in a meaningful game going forward either something very good — or very bad — just happened.

The best case scenario is that Tanney never has to take a snap. If that’s the thinking, why didn’t they just hire him as QB coach and give that roster spot to a player that con help them on the field?
