Giants’ Pat Shurmur: There’s nothing Daniel Jones can’t do

In April’s NFL Draft, the New York Giants chose to bank their future on Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth-overall pick. Critics lined up from here to Canarsie to lambast general manager Dave Gettleman, saying he panicked and took Jones way too early in the draft.

Gettleman refuted reports that there were no takers for Jones between pick No. 6 and the Giants’ next selection, No. 17. He stuck to his guns that the team believed there were several teams poised to take Jones before the Giants picked again.

That’s all water under the bridge, now. Jones is here, he’s signed and he’s ready to assume his rightful place as Eli Manning’s heir apparent as the Giants’ quarterback of the future.

As training camp begins, head coach Pat Shurmur told reporters after Wednesday’s rookie workout that Jones has “exceeded expectations” and that “We haven’t seen anything he can’t do at quarterback.”

Shurmur also said, “We’re less surprised than maybe some people are.”

The Giants are confident they made the correct choice in hanging their hats on Daniel Jones’ prospects. He whisked through the NFL Combine and his pro day with little incident, showing polish and maturity usually absent in most rookie quarterbacks.

In his short time with the Giants, he has displayed the traits that Shurmur seeks in his quarterbacks — mobility, intelligence and accuracy.
