Giants’ Pat Shurmur noncommittal on who will play vs. Jets

The New York Giants open the preseason this Thursday night when they host their co-tenants, the New York Jets, at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants have a river of new faces and fans are both anxious and curious to see their new team in action. But who will they actually get to see play in this game?

“After practice we’re going to reassess where everyone is health-wise, but a few guys who are healthy and have been practicing might not play,” said head coach Pat Shurmur on Tuesday. “But then certainly the guys that can’t play at this point in training camp, won’t, either. So, I don’t have a final answer on any of that yet though I do have some strong ideas who may not. I’ll just leave it at that.”

Asked about the status of rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, Shumur smiled.

“He’s a guy that will play, I’ll tell you that for sure. It’s good. The preseason games especially for the quarterback, to be able to go out there. It’s the next real step in his process, so to speak. So, we’re looking forward to seeing him go out and execute,” he said.

One player that will not be on the field is wide receiver Sterling Shepard, who is recovering from a thumb fracture bu has been practicing. He is due to have the thumb x-rayed this week to check on the healing process.

Other players who are doubtful to appear in this week’s game are rookie OT George Asafo-Adjei (concussion), CB Sam Beal (hamstring), and WRs Darius Slayton (hamstring) and Brittan Golden (groin).

The Giants’ starters may not play very long, perhaps a series or two on offense and maybe a little longer on defense since there are so many first-year players.
