If the New York Giants decide to part ways with head coach Pat Shurmur on Monday, he gets it. He doesn’t agree with it, but he gets it.
“We didn’t win enough games, right? I own that. I don’t make any excuses for that,” Shurmur told reporters following Sunday’s loss to the Eagles. “We’re all part of this and we all own the fact that we didn’t win enough games.
“This is a ‘wins’ business — I get it, I get it.”
Although the Giants have won just nine games since Shurmur’s arrival, he feels the team is in much better shape than when he inherited it from Ben McAdoo & Co.
“If I’m back, I’m looking forward to working with this young talent. If I’m not, whoever is coaching this team has got a great group of young players, the dead money goes away, there’s going to be cap space, we’ve got picks. So, there’s ways to improve the team,” Shurmur said. “If I’m not here, that’s what the new coach has to look forward to. If I am here, I can’t wait to get back to work. That’s about as honest and clear as I can make it.”
Shurmur was dealt a poor hand just as he was in Cleveland, but that’s the job he willingly signed on for. He didn’t get things done and as a result, he may be a casualty of this “wins business.”
But Shurmur is right about one thing… Whoever takes over this team will have a wealth of young talent to work with that now have some legitimate experience. That’s a much better starting point than Shurmur had to work with.
