Giants’ Pat Shurmur: James Bettcher, Mike Shula will not be fired

The New York Giants hit a new low on Sunday, falling to the New York Jets by a score of 34-27, dropping their record to 2-8 on the season and establishing themselves as a complete laughingstock.

Despite the humiliating loss and disastrous season that just continues to go downhill, head coach Pat Shurmur revealed that there will be no staff changes during the bye week.

That means both defensive coordinator James Bettcher and offensive coordinator Mike Shula are safe, but what about Shurmur himself?

While he determines the fate of Bettcher and Shula, Shurmur has no control over his own at this point. However, he may be in luck as co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch are unlikely to fire another coach in-season just two years removed from the last time they did it no matter how angry they may be.

Still, the losing is beginning to establish a negative culture in East Rutherford and pathetic play is becoming an accepted expectation. Fair or unfair, that falls on the shoulders of the head coach and if he’s unwilling to make staff changes in the face of desperate need, then he’s essentially hitching his wagon to a horse with a broken leg.

Mara and Tisch will see that, but like Bettcher and Shula, expect to see Shurmur back on the sidelines in Week 12.
