Giants’ Pat Shurmur doubles down: Eli Manning is our starter

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning had a rough start to organized team activities, going 1-for-6 during the first team portion of practice here in 2019, which was highlighted by two ugly interceptions.

Despite that less than stellar beginning, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur praised the veteran, saying Manning threw the ball well and looked strong physically.

Shurmur also immediately dispelled any notion that there will be a quarterback competition or controversy, stating bluntly that Manning is and will remain the team’s starter now and throughout 2019.

Behind Manning, rookie Daniel Jones will see the majority of second-team snaps, while Kyle Lauletta and Alex Tanney will pick up what’s left.

It would take something unexpected and profound to unseat Manning as the team’s starter, so for those anxiously awaiting the end of his tenure, it would behoove you to take a deep breath and settle on the reality that this is still Eli’s team.

The only way Manning is removed from under center would be an untimely injury or a disastrous overall record midway through the season or later. And until that time comes, Manning will remain the man in New York.

Of course, the Giants also said they did not sign wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. just to turn around and trade him, yet they did just that, so who really knows how things will play out.
