Giants’ Pat Shurmur: Daniel Jones has arm strength to make NFL throws

When the New York Giants drafted Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, fans across the globe were in an uproar. Many thought Jones would have been around at No. 17, others simply didn’t like the pick. But general manager Dave Gettleman obviously felt differently, and it’s clear the Giants are going to stand behind their methods.

On Friday, the Giants opened rookie minicamp and despite many experts and analysts saying that Jones’ arm strength would be a problem, he seemed to prove them wrong.

Head coach Pat Shurmur addressed the topic of Jones’ arm strength on Saturday and scoffed at the notion his quarterback doesn’t have what it takes to make the NFL throws.

“I don’t know that I wasn’t involved in those debates. You know, we obviously felt differently, so I really couldn’t tell you,” Shurmur said when asked about the expert scouting reports.

A follow up question discussed whether what he saw on tape varied from what he saw in person. Again, Shurmur scoffed at the notion.

“No, watching him on tape I thought he had a strong enough arm to make all the throws, so you’re obviously looking to confirm it when you’re with him in person and we felt like he did,” Shurmur added.

No matter what “experts” and analysts think about Daniel Jones, it’s clear the Giants have no doubts about their top draft pick. They feel he is the best quarterback for their team, he fits the scheme and is the perfect heir to the aging Eli Manning. And Jones is responding in his own right, not with words, but by showing everyone exactly what he is capable of.
