The New York Giants entered the 2019 regular season with expectations that far exceeded what most, including Vegas, anticipated for them. However, water was quickly poured over their heads as reality sunk in following a 35-17 loss at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys.
The Week 1 divisional loss puts the Giants right back in the place where they resided all of last season, finished the season prior and has become somewhat of a home for them: The NFC East basement.
Let’s take a quick look at the standings after Week 1:
Dallas Cowboys (1-0)
The Cowboys put an absolute beatdown on the Giants to open the season, and did so without several of their key players and others on a strict pitch count. It was an impressive showing for the 2018 NFC East champions and proves, as much as it may pain some to hear, that they’re legitimate contenders for the Super Bowl title this season.
Philadelphia Eagles (1-0)
The Eagles had an early scare at the hands of the Washington Redskins, but erased any early doubt with a strong second half that saw them out-score Washington, 25-7. DeSean Jackson proved he’ll be a playmaker for them, while Carson Wentz looked mighty dangerous — assuming he can remain healthy.
Washington Redskins (0-1)
The Redskins had a strong first half against the Eagles and even had a snowball’s chance late if they were able to recover an onside kick, but ultimately, they did what the Redskins do and choked away what would have been a potential upset. Case Keenum played exceptionally well, but they are probably re-thinking their decision to make Adrian Peterson a healthy scratch. In his absence, they rushed for only 28 yards and a 2.2 ypc average.
New York Giants (0-1)
Save for their opening series on both offense and defense, the Giants fell completely flat on Sunday. They misused Saquon Barkley, their young secondary looked like Swiss cheese with extra large holes and perhaps the time has arrived to start truly questioning head coach Pat Shurmur. Ugly all around and fans should have little faith it can be turned around.
