The NFL trading deadline is rapidly approaching and teams must decide if they intend to be buyers or sellers.
For the New York Giants, they obviously fall into the latter category following a 22-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night, which dropped their record to 1-6 on the season.
But even before their latest loss, the Giants appeared to be trending in that direction.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports that the Giants are “open for business” and could part ways with both wide receiver Golden Tate and offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler, two of their key additions in recent years.
The Giants are open for business as well. Veterans Golden Tate and Kevin Zeitler are two names that came up pretty consistently with other teams. Tate’s contract and declining production could make him difficult to move for anything significant. Zeitler, on the other hand, might fetch a return based on, again, the crying need for experienced linemen across the league.
Considering the Giants are thin at both wide receiver and along the offensive line, it would be detrimental to the well-being of quarterback Daniel Jones to trade either Tate or Zeitler.
At the same time, business is business and the Giants need to acquire some additional draft capital as they continue what feels like a never-ending rebuild.
Both Tate and Zeitler have tricky contracts and would be difficult to move — not likely yielding anything of major substance — but if that’s the one piece a potential playoff team is missing, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that general manager Dave Gettleman’s phone is ringing.
