Giants now fighting to stay out of NFC East basement

The New York Giants entered a Week 9 game against the Dallas Cowboys believing they could go on a Washington Nationals-like run and find their way into the playoffs, potentially shocking the football world.

Instead, they were humiliated in front of a national audience in their home stadium where “Go Cowboys!” chants echoed throughout the night.

In the end, the Giants fell, 37-18, dropping their record to 2-7 on the season and leaving them with the reality that a first-place battle is not in their cards, but a last-place battle is.

Dallas Cowboys (5-3)

A day of high-end production has never been easier for the Cowboys. Just ask running back Ezekiel Elliott, who literally laughed at the Giants defense en route to 139 yards on the ground and then mocked them after the game. But now that Dallas has done away with the fading Giants, they’ll have to contend with the likes of the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams in the coming weeks. Good luck.

Philadelphia Eagles (5-4)

With a 22-14 beating of the Chicago Bears, the Eagles went back above .500 on the season and have now won back-to-back games, matching their season high win streak. But what does that mean for these Eagles, who are streaky? Well, with the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks coming up over the next two weeks, it likely means their roller coaster continues with a downward spiral.

New York Giants (2-7)

The Giants are a laughing stock and have lost more games than any other team in the league since the start of 2017. They now face the reality that their season is over and their sole focus should be staying ahead of the Washington Redskins. That becomes easier now that the meat of their schedule is over, but games against the New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and aforementioned Redskins are no walks in the park at this point. Further humiliation could be on tap.

Washington Redskins (1-8)

The Redskins mercifully enter their bye week with just a single win over the hapless Miami Dolphins, who essentially handed that game to Washington with a last-second gamble. But as bad as the Redskins are, they are only a single step behind the Giants with a game between the two left to go. And when the Redskins return in two weeks, they do so against the Jets — a game they could easily win to keep pressure on Big Blue.
