Three weeks ago, the New York Giants had improved their record to 2-2 and were suddenly in the thick of an NFC East race against three other struggling teams. Even after dropping two straight and falling to 2-4, the Giants somehow remained in contention.
Following a Week 7 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, the now 2-5 Giants find themselves two full games out of first place, but it may as well be 10.
This Giants team isn’t going anywhere and will be lucky to win four games. So rather than battling for the top spot in the division, they now find themselves battling to stay out of the bottom spot.
Here’s how the NFC East stacks up after seven weeks of the season:
Dallas Cowboys (4-3)
After three straight losses (two to quality opponents), talk of Jason Garrett’s demise picked up considerably. However, he may have saved his job with an absolute beat-down of the Eagles on Sunday night, which precedes a much-needed bye week for the Cowboys. They will return in early December to take on the Giants at MetLife Stadium.
Philadelphia Eagles (3-4)
Around and around we go, who are these Eagles, nobody knows. After beating the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets, Philly has now lost two straight games to the Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys, falling below .500 on the season and just missing being leap-frogged by the Giants, who can’t get out of their own way.
New York Giants (2-5)
What can even be said? The Giants were embarrassed on Sunday despite a seemingly close score, and their rebuild may be failing so badly that yet another rebuild may soon be pondered. Yes, it’s that ugly in New York and it shows no signs of getting any better. The team has talent but they continue to lose. It’s almost as if firing Tom Coughlin after the 2015 season wasn’t the answer. Who knew?
Washington Redskins (1-6)
The Redskins have a one-point win over the Miami Dolphins this season, which came thanks to a failed two-point conversion courtesy of Ryan Fitzpatrick as time expired. That’s it. That’s their claim to fame. Their head coach has been fired and it may be time to tear down the entire thing in D.C.
