Giants nearly bottom out in ESPN’s football power index

Nate Burleson and his unexpected optimism aside, there aren’t many across the football landscape who expect much from the New York Giants in 2020.

After all, the Giants have been terrible for nearly a decade, are on their second general manager, fourth head coach (if you count Steve Spagnuolo) and third set of new systems since 2017, not to mention they have a second-year quarterback and no defined leadership in the locker room.

Even those of us here at Giants Wire have limited expectations going into the 2020 season, projecting just five wins in our way-too-early game-by-game predictions.

ESPN actually believes the Giants will win six games this coming season, but that’s not enough to put them into even average territory. In fact, the Giants very nearly bottomed out in ESPN’s 2020 football power index.

26. New York Giants

Projected wins: 6.1
Chance to reach playoffs: 12%

The only teams to rank lower than the Giants in FPI (with a lower chance at the playoffs) are the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Comparatively, the Philadelphia Eagles ranked No. 6 overall (66% playoff chance) and the Dallas Cowboys ranked No. 5 overall (69% playoff chance).

The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs topped the list with a 94% playoff chance.
