Giants’ Mike Remmers is healthy, but starting spot not guaranteed

The New York Giants signed veteran right tackle Mike Remmers late in the offseason and the immediate assumption was that he’d slide into the starting right tackle spot come Week 1.

Not so fast, says head coach Pat Shurmur.

Although Remmers has returned to the field following an offseason back surgery and appears to be performing well, Shurmur has cautioned against naming him the starter, noting that Chad Wheeler and others are also in the running for the job.

“We’re going to play the best player at that spot,” Shurmur told reporters on Thursday.

Remmers will start training camp with the first team, but may eventually split time with the aforementioned Wheeler, as well as rookie seventh-round pick George Asafo-Adjei.

Unlike at the quarterback position, the battle at right tackle appears legitimate. However, it’s difficult not to give Remmers the edge — even given Shurmur’s revelation — after Wheeler struggled mightily in 2018.

However, the Giants clearly want to make this a competition in effort to bring the best out of everyone, so at least for now, their offensive line rebuild is not 100 percent complete.
