Giants’ Kareem Martin out several weeks with knee injury

The New York Giants have no immediate plans to place linebacker Kareem Martin on injured reserve, which could cost the team in the short-term as head coach Pat Shurmur revealed on Wednesday that the veteran will be out several weeks, not days.

The 27-year-old Martin suffered a knee injury in a Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and was unable to return to the game. Earlier this week, the Giants listed the injury as a knee sprain.

Martin joined the Giants last offseason after spending four seasons under defensive coordinator James Bettcher as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.

In 16 games (seven starts) last season, Martin recorded 48 tackles, five stuffs, 1.5 sacks and two passes defensed.

Before leaving Sunday’s game, Martin had recorded two tackles.
