Giants’ John Mara open to Jason Garrett as offensive coordinator

New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Joe Judge will collaborate on the coaching staff before any hires are officially made, but co-owner John Mara says all final decisions will be made by Judge.

With that being said, Mara also told reporters on Thursday that he’s 100 percent open to soon-to-be former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett joining the organization as the offensive coordinator.

Leading up to the announcement that Judge had been hired as the team’s 19th head coach, there were conflicting reports on the team’s interest in Garrett.

Several reports suggested the Giants were seeking to interview him for their offensive coordinator job, while several others indicated the request was for a head coaching interview that fell by the wayside after Jones blew team ownership and executives away on Monday.

Either way, there is clearly some level of interest in Garrett and that was likely expressed to Judge. Whether or not he goes down that rabbit hole remains to be seen, but should he, he’s already got the green light from Mara & Co. to make that hire.

Garrett would be a welcomed and experienced addition that could serve to benefit Judge greatly, but would he be willing to serve as offensive coordinator on a team that passed him over as head coach? He would get to take on the Cowboys twice per season, so that certainly makes things more interesting.
