Giants’ John Mara doesn’t want Hail Marys to be challenged

It’s been two months since NFL owners decided to make some changes and voted to allow pass interference calls to be challenged, but already New York Giants co-owner John Mara and several others are looking to tweak the new rule.

At the Spring League Meeting in Key Biscayne on Wednesday, the NFL’s competition committee received approval from owners to potentially allow a coaches’ challenge in the final two minutes of a half as opposed to a booth review.

The proposed rule would create an issue for Hail Marys, which often features a lot of contact and posturing down the field. That presents a potential problem — a problem Mara would simply prefer the league not deal with.

“I think we’re trying to figure out how to deal with the Hail Marys because no, we don’t want those challenged,” Mara said, via the Hartford Courant. “I think whenever you have a new rule like this, there’s always some concern about how it’s gonna be implemented. [But] I think we’ll be fine.”

In an effort to combat the Hail Mary challenge, the league will move to define the play, thereby making it exempt from a potential challenge.

Although NFL owners have empowered the competition committee to make adjustments to these rules, a final decision won’t be made until early June.
