Since hiring Jason Garrett as their offensive coordinator in 2020, the New York Giants rank 32nd in yards to go on third-down, 31st in points, 31st in explosive plays, 30th in points per drive and 28th in yards per play.
The team’s overall record? 6-13.
Despite all of that, Giants head coach Joe Judge has no plans to make a change. When the team travels down to Louisiana to take on the New Orleans Saints this Sunday, Garrett will continue calling plays.
“Obviously, game plan-wise, we’ll make some adjustments, we’ll do some things that we think we can improve more. We’ll obviously dive into a couple of focal points to make sure that we finish in the red zone — that’s been something we have to do obviously better as a team,” Judge told reporters on Monday. “In terms of who is going to be calling the plays – directly to answer your question – in terms of offense, defense, kicking game, the coordinators will still be making the play-calling this week.”
The Giants obviously have more fundamental issues to deal with than just the offensive play-caller. There are serious front office issues brought on by John Mara’s fierce loyalty and old-school way of thinking, but taking the reigns from Garrett still would have been a positive step.
The Giants are 0-3 and staring down the barrel at a possible 0-8 or worse if they can’t get their offense firing. And while their defense has its own problems, ranking dead last in points over a 19-game span certainly isn’t going to get things done.
How can the Giants even evaluate the talent they have in such a vanilla offense? Whether they’re playing to win now or trying to evaluate for the future, it’s all stunted by Garrett’s three downs for 10 yards philosophy.
If nothing else, it’s certainly detrimental to the continued development of quarterback Daniel Jones, who’s at his best running the RPO and taking shots down the field. The whole world saw that in Week 2 against the Washington Football Team.
“We’re going to stay consistent with what we’re doing and keep improving as a team. There’s a lot of things we need to clean up coaching-wise, execution-wise, but we’re going to stay on the track with it and make sure we get those things right before making any radical changes,” Judge said.
There you have it, Giants fans. Expect more of the same on Sunday. It’s all about consistency — a consistently bad offense.
