Giants’ Janoris Jenkins attempts to recruit Patrick Peterson to New York

The New York Giants have a need at the cornerback position and one potential solution, should he become available, is Arizona Cardinals veteran Patrick Peterson.

That’s an idea that current Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins can buy into. In fact, he loved it so much that he actually reached out to Peterson in an attempt to recruit him to New York.

Jenkins has never been shy about reaching out to players in an attempt to recruit, having done it previously with wide receiver Dez Bryant, running back Le’Veon Bell and others.

However, could the Giants actually find a way to land Peterson?

The Cardinals insist their cornerback isn’t on the market despite some apparent sour feelings after not showing up to the voluntary offseason workout program, but stranger things have happened — just look at what the Giants have done this offseason.

It’s unlikely Peterson, who is arguably one of the most effective defensive backs in the league, would be moved, but should the Giants and general manager Dave Gettleman offer up a King’s ransom, Arizona would most certainly listen.

The larger problem in acquiring Peterson would not be the draft and player capital required, but the massive contract that would come with him.

Peterson is owed $11 million in 2019 and $12.05 million in 2020, while the Giants have slightly over $14.5 million in available cap space after restructuring the contract of guard Kevin Zeitler. That, of course, would be well outside their wheelhouse when considering the amount they need for their draft pool (potentially 12 picks).

It’s fun to speculate, but Peterson to New York is unlikely despite Jenkins’ best efforts.
