Giants injury report: Saquon Barkley takes major step forward

The New York Giants returned to practice on Wednesday ahead of their Week 5 game against the Minnesota Vikings, and the biggest injury-related news surprisingly came via running back Saquon Barkley.

Less than two weeks removed from suffering a high ankle sprain, Barkley, who is projected to miss upwards of eight weeks, was working with trainers on the sideline.

More impressive than just returning to the field however, Barkley was seen running, cutting and jumping.

That does not look like a player who is going to miss eight weeks…

Meanwhile, in the portion of practice open to the media, linebacker Alec Ogletree (hamstring) was not practicing, but fellow linebacker Tae Davis (concussion) was wearing the yellow non-contact jersey, which represents a step forward in league protocol.

Guard Kevin Zeitler (shoulder) was also not practicing, although it’s likely just a rest day for the veteran who is reportedly dealing with an AC joint issue.

Finally, sophomore cornerback Sam Beal, who is currently on injured reserve with a hamstring issue, was working with trainers on the side as he attempts to work his way back to the field.

Below is the team’s official practice report with injury designations:

Did not practice: Saquon Barkley (ankle), Alec Ogletree (hamstring) and Kevin Zeitler (shoulder).

Limited participation: Wayne Gallman (neck), Tae Davis (concussion), Nate Solder (neck) and Lorenzo Carter (neck).
