Giants ‘hope’ to have Kadarius Toney back soon

New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney left practice on Tuesday and was later seen being worked on by trainers.

Whatever injury Toney sustained, it was serious enough to leave him behind as the team traveled to Foxborough to take on the New England Patriots on Thursday night.

Toney was among a large contingent of players who did not travel as the result of injury. He was joined by defensive tackle Leonard Williams and several others.

But just how serious is Toney’s injury? Is it related to his offseason knee surgery? Head coach Brian Daboll isn’t saying.

“With all due respect, I’m just not going to get into the specifics of it really with anybody. He is working back. We’ll see where he is at when we get back,” Daboll told reporters.

Ultimately, Daboll said, the Giants “hope” to have him back sooner than later.

“I hope so. I think he is working hard,” Daboll said. “Again, everything we do, we talk about and try to do what’s best for the players, so we’ll see. They’ve had a couple of days here, yesterday, today, tomorrow, and recover and see where we’re at.”

Under normal circumstances, Toney missing the first preseason game due to injury would be an afterthought. However, after a tumultuous rookie season in which he dealt with a variety of injuries and issues, there is growing concern about Toney’s durability. That’s being compounded by the fact that Daboll has routinely worked in load management days for the second-year receiver this summer.

And that doesn’t even touch on his inconsistency. Before going down on Tuesday, Toney caught a bad case of the yips and was dropping passes left and right — both during the individual period and the team period of practice,

With fellow wide receiver Kenny Golladay also struggling and Sterling Shepard still on the PUP list, the Giants could really use Toney in the huddle. And Toney could really use to develop more of a rapport with quarterback Daniel Jones given how little they’ve been on the field together.
