Giants hold off Eagles on late defensive stand; Eli Manning throws four TD passes in 28-23 win

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. _ The Giants scored two early touchdowns set up by a pair of interceptions and then held on to beat the Eagles, 28-23, at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. It was the Giants' first win over the Eagles since 2013 and allowed the Giants to keep pace with the first-place Cowboys in the NFC East. The Cowboys (7-1) beat the Browns, 35-10, and lead the second-place Giants (5-3) by two games.

The Eagles had the ball at the Giants' 34 with 1:48 remaining after Eli Manning's tipped pass was intercepted by Jordan Hicks on a third-and-4 play from his own 29. After an Eagles first down, Carson Wentz threw four straight incompletions, including a fourth-and-10 pass from the 17 toward Jordan Matthews in the end zone with 1:19 remaining, to end the final threat.

The win may prove costly for the Giants as two important offensive starters had to leave the game with injuries. Guard Justin Pugh sprained his right knee and wide receiver Victor Cruz injured his right ankle in the first half. Neither returned and their status moving forward is unclear.

Landon Collins, who had two picks in the last Giants game two weeks ago, started this contest with an interception of Wentz on the Eagles' second play of the game. That set up a 26-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning to Odell Beckham Jr. It was the first of four touchdown passes by Manning.

Three plays later Andrew Adams picked off Wentz to set up a 30-yard touchdown pass to Roger Lewis Jr. That made it 14-0 after just 5:17.

The Giants added another touchdown in the second quarter on a 1-yard fade to Beckham to go ahead 21-10, a score they held at the half thanks to a blocked field-goal attempt with 1:07 remaining (Jason Pierre-Paul blocked it and Janoris Jenkins recovered) and a pair of fourth-down stops when Eagles coach Doug Pederson chose not to kick field goals.

The Eagles started the second half much better than the first, driving 70 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-17. The Giants responded with a drive capped by Manning's 32-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard and went ahead 28-17. An Eagles field goal early in the fourth and another with 3:51 remaining made it 28-23.
