At this point in the offseason, there are many teams strapped for cash. The New York Giants are no different right now, especially when the rookie contracts are factored in.
Though the numbers aren’t official yet with only one rookie having signed his four-year deal, the Giants have just under $3.5 million in salary-cap space after the deal to bring in quarterback Cooper Rush and when factoring in the rookie contracts.
Most of the free-agent moves have been made and any others coming in will be on cheaper deals. The one to watch, however, will be the situation with edge rusher Markus Golden, who was slapped with the seldom-used UFA tender.
The tender, which is worth 110% of his 2019 salary, doesn’t go into effect until July 22. Until that time, Golden has the opportunity to sign with another team if he wants to. If he doesn’t, the Giants will hold his exclusive rights until Week 10.
The expected cap hit for Golden’s tender will be just over $4 million. That won’t go into effect until July 15, which means the Giants could wait to see if Golden signs elsewhere before freeing up some salary-cap space.
The Giants are likely going to tweak the roster as the offseason continues on, but don’t expect any major moves given their cap restraints.
