Late last week, the New York Giants signed defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and cornerback Deandre Baker to their rookie deals, leaving just two members of their 2019 NFL Draft class (Daniel Jones and Oshane Ximines) unsigned.
The signings of Lawrence and Baker ate up roughly $3 million of the team’s remaining camp space, leaving them with right around $9 million left over.
However, as Dan Duggan of The Athletic points out, $4 million of that will likely go to the aforementioned Jones and Ximines, essentially leaving the Giants with around $5 million to operate throughout the 2019 regular season.
It’s highly unlikely the Giants sign any remaining free agents before the start of the season, so their focus will be on remaining healthy and saving that money for practice squad and low-tier depth moves throughout the year.
Of course, any major injuries could change things drastically, potentially forcing general manager Dave Gettleman to use larger chunks of that money elsewhere. But that’s a bridge to cross only when we come to it.
For now, the Giants are in solid cap shape, all things considered, having gotten the necessary work done this offseason.
