Giants’ Golden Tate: Serving as emergency QB ‘could be scary’

The New York Giants will likely be without sophomore quarterback Daniel Jones on Sunday as he nurses a hamstring strain.

Until his return, Colt McCoy will be commandeering an offense that is currently 30th in points per game (19.5) and 29th in yards per game (313.8). While things have not looked great for this offense, the team is still in first place in the division and trying to maintain this ranking for a playoff spot.

In order for that to happen, New York will need to maintain consistent play at the quarterback position (in each of the last three wins the quarterback did not commit a turnover).

While it looks like McCoy will have to deal with this burden, for now, wide receiver Golden Tate is ready for the challenge should he be called upon.

“Yeah, it’s one of those things that sounds really cool, like guys just talking about it not thinking it’s realistically going to happen. But then once it becomes potentially realistic, you’re like ‘Oh, oh. This could be scary.’ I think I’m one of the candidates that could go out there if something were to happen, God forbid,” Tate told reporters on Thursday.

In a normal year, this would seem like a very unrealistic situation. However, with COVID-19, things around the league have shaped up very differently. Last week, the NFL saw the Denver Broncos have all four of their quarterbacks out due to the virus (high risk contacts) causing practice squad wide receiver, Kendall Hilton, to have to step up and play quarterback.

Should a similar situation happen with Big Blue, Golden Tate is ready albeit somewhat reluctant.

The 11-year veteran has attempted three career passes, completing two for a total of 41 yards and one touchdown.
