New York Giants wide receiver Golden Tate, who is already suspended for the first four game of the regular season for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drugs policy, has been placed in concussion protocol.
It’s unclear exactly when Tate had his bell rung, but it occurred at some point in a Week 2 preseason game against the Chicago Bears.
“He’s in the concussion protocol,” head coach Pat Shurmur told reporters on Sunday.
While suspended, Tate is allowed to participate in practice and preseason games, so missing any time ahead of a four-game suspension could be additionally detrimental to the team’s offensive chemistry.
Shurmur gave no indication of the severity of Tate’s concussion or any potential timetable on his return.
Giants running back Jonathan Hilliman suffered a concussion in the first week of the preseason, but was able to return against the Bears. Rookie offensive lineman George Asafo-Adjei hasn’t been as lucky, missing several weeks as he recovers from a concussion of his own.
The Giants enter Week 4 of training camp on Monday morning, leaving Tate just a few weeks to return and get work in.
