EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. _ The Giants' season has been filled with nothing but bad losses, but on Sunday it got ugly.
The Giants were embarrassed at MetLife Stadium in a 51-17 blowout loss to the Rams and remain winless at home this season, dropping to 0-4 and 1-7 overall. It was the most points the Giants allowed at home since 1964 when they allowed 52 to the Cleveland Browns.
Rams quarterback Jared Goff completed just 14 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns while running back Todd Gurley rushed for just 59 yards, but two touchdowns.
The defining play came with 9:26 left in the second quarter when the Rams faced a third-and-33 due to several penalties. But Goff hit Robert Woods on a screen pass and the speedy receiver burst for 52 yards through the Giants defense for a touchdown, giving them a 17-7 lead.
Two minutes later, on the Rams' next possession, Goff hit Sammy Watkins on the fourth play of the drive for a 67-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 24-7, putting a dagger in the Giants before halftime.
The Rams added another touchdown, a one-yard run by Gurley, along with a field goal by Greg Zuerlein to take a 31-10 lead into halftime.
Eight of the nine Rams scoring drives were completed in less than four minutes. Their longest drive came late in the fourth quarter with Goff out of the game, which took 6:40 off the clock.
For as bad as the Giants were on defense, the offense was not much better.
Eli Manning became the seventh player in NFL history to throw for at least 50,000 career yards on Sunday, but that milestone was overshadowed by a poor performance from the quarterback and offense in general, which turned the ball over three times.
Manning was sacked and fumbled the ball on the opening drive, which set up the Rams' first touchdown while rookie running back Wayne Gallman fumbled in the second quarter, which led to the Woods touchdown screen on third-and-33.
Manning also threw an interception from the Giants' own 14-yard line, which resulted in a Rams field goal.
Manning had his chances to make plays, too, but missed a wide open Sterling Shepard deep down field, which likely would have resulted in a touchdown and later missed receiver Tavarres King just before halftime in the back of the end zone, overthrowing him.
Manning did find King for a touchdown in the first quarter and Evan Engram in the fourth, finishing the game with 220 passing yards, two touchdowns, an interception and an 80.8 quarterback rating.
He was pulled for backup Geno Smith for the final drive of the game. Smith went 0-for-2 in a three-and-out.
