Giants draft wide receiver Darius Slayton: Instant analysis

There’s no way the New York Giants could ever replace wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Not with one player, anyway. They are doing with quantity and added to their cadre of receivers on Saturday with the 171st pick in Round 6 of the 2019 NFL Draft.

The latest addition to Big Blue is Auburn wide receiver Darius Slayton, a 6-foot-1, 190 pound target who ran a 4.39 40 at the NFL Combine.

Slayton was earmarked for as early as the third round, but like many skill players in this draft, slipped a down the order a tad. The Giants realized the value and grabbed Slayton in the fifth round.

What can he do for the Giants?

Slayton is the deep threat they need to compliment their other wideouts (Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate and Cody Latimer) who are better suited for a short and medium-range passing attack.

Here’s some of Slayton’s strength’s via NFL.com:

Has the traits/ability to work on all three levels; Able to get away from press without delays; Big accelerator off the line of scrimmage; Runs with gliding strides; Electric deep ball speed to stretch the field; Posted six touchdowns of 50-plus yards since 2017; Eyes find football quickly for back-shoulder adjustments; Finds an extra few inches of catch-radius for high throws; Quick to get upfield after catch; Make-you-miss runner with above average YAC potential

This could be a potential steal for Big Blue. The world is still spinning on its axis, folks. It didn’t stop when the Giants traded OBJ away to Cleveland. Their passing game just got another big shot in the arm.
