Giants’ DeAndre Baker has arraigment set for September 15

The New York Giants open their regular season schedule on Monday, September 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. On the very next day, cornerback DeAndre Baker will be arraigned on armed robbery charges in Florida.

Baker was formally charged with four counts of robbery with a firearm earlier this month, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted. Prior to that, he had been placed on the commissioner’s exempt list.

Prosecutors opted not to charge Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar, who was also arrested in May as part of the same incident, citing a lack of evidence.

The arraignment is merely a part of the legal process for Baker, who will not speak in front of a judge. Rather, his attorney, Bradford Cohen, will either enter a plea of guilty or not guilty — and we know which that is most likely to be.

Baker is expected to remain on the commissioner’s exempt list until his legal issues are resolved, but given the court back-up in Florida due to COVID-19, that could linger well into 2021.
