Giants’ Davis Webb will consider a turn to coaching this offseason

The New York Giants could be losing a key contributor to their quarterback room in Davis Webb. Not to another team, but to the coaching profession.

Webb, 28, was signed by the Giants this past offseason to be a backup to Daniel Jones and to ease Jones into head coach Brian Daboll’s system. The narrative was that Webb was destined to become a coach in this league but was going to continue to play until that opportunity came along.

Webb had spent the previous three seasons as a backup with the Buffalo Bills, where Daboll was the offensive coordinator. Before that, he served as a backup for the Jets for a season after playing one season for the Giants as their third-round draft pick out of Cal in 2017.

“I have a great appreciation for Davis as a person first, but how he goes about his business,” Daboll said at the Giants’ mini camp last June. “He is excellent in the meetings rooms. He’s good with the other positions. It’s good to have people that know your system, no question about it. But I want him to go out there and play quarterback, too. He has bounced around a little bit in the league. Give him an opportunity to go out there and play.”

Jones lauded Webb as a great help to him this year and credited Webb with helping him transition to Daboll’s offense.

Webb came to the Giants for the second time this year still not having thrown a pass in a regular season game. That changed in Week 18 when the Giants played a meaningless game against the Eagles and Webb drew the start.

He played fairly well considering the circumstances, throwing his first NFL touchdown pass and scoring another on the ground. The Giants’ second- and third-stringers lost to the Eagles’ starters, 22-16.
