Giants’ Dave Gettleman wants ‘two legitimate starters’ in Round 1

The New York Giants’ strategy for the 2019 NFL Draft has been a guessing game up until now, but general manager Dave Gettleman might have given some insight into the team’s plans.

In an interview with NFL Network’s Kim Jones, via Ryan Dunleavy of NJ Advance Media, the Giants’ general manager made it clear he wants to leave the first round with two day-one starters.

So, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman might have just tipped his NFL Draft strategy. He told NFL Network’s Kim Jones that he wants to come out of the first round with “two legitimate starters … (who) can step in and help us win now.”

When talking about taking a quarterback, Gettleman was clear the quarterback he drafts wouldn’t start right away.

“He wouldn’t (start right away) but it’s the position,” Gettleman told Jones. “The worst place u can be is quarterback hell.”

Whether or not the Giants draft a quarterback in the first round remains to be seen. What is certain is the fact that any quarterback taken by Big Blue would sit behind Manning for one season.

So, if two starters is what Gettleman wants, the Giants are likely looking at taking a defensive player with the No. 6 overall pick, which could consist of Kentucky’s Josh Allen, LSU’s Devin White or Houston’s Ed Oliver, to name a few possibilities.

No. 17 is more of a wild card for New York. The team could go with another defensive player in this deep defensive draft, or it is possible the Giants fill the void at right tackle, either by picking at No. 17 or trading up to nab their guy.

The possibilities are endless as the draft approaches, but it’s looking more and more like taking a quarterback isn’t in the cards for the Giants, at least not with their first two picks.
