Giants’ Dave Gettleman listed as one of NFL’s worst general managers

New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has a resume that reads like a Hall of Famer, including a multitude of Super Bowl appearances and victories in just about every city he’s graced.

Despite that, Gettleman continues to battle a negative reputation because he does business in a rather unconventional and often blunt manor. It’s not something that sits well with players or members of the media.

Here in 2019, Gettleman’s wild approach has once again drawn ire, especially in the aftermath of an Odell Beckham Jr. trade and the failure to even negotiate with safety Landon Collins.

Because of that, For the Win, a part of the USA TODAY network, ranked Gettleman as one of the very worst general managers in all of football.

26. Dave Gettleman, Giants

It was all good just three years ago. After Dave Gettleman put the finishing touches on Carolina’s 15-1 roster, he spent the ensuing years tarnishing his reputation with his outdated philosophy. Gettleman really jumped the shark this offseason, failing to get good value out of any of his first-round picks and getting rid of the Giants three best players. And seemingly all of this was in an effort to appease Eli Freaking Manning.

Knocking Gettleman for a perceived lack of value in the first round — something that is open to interpretation for each individual — seems like a bit of a reach, but to each their own. Only time will truly tell what value Gettleman got, but if his draft history is any indication, the Giants will likely be happy long-term.

Moreover, the notion that any decision has been made to appease Manning has been debunked. In fact, Daniel Jones at No. 6 overall should be proof positive of that.

Whatever the case (or perception) may be, it will be interesting to look back at these rankings and the criticism a year from now. By then, we’ll know if Gettleman got it right or wrong.
