Giants’ Darius Slayton running with first-team offense during OTAs

New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton seems to be making strides, as the rookie was running with the first-team offense during organized team activities on Tuesday.

Slayton, who was drafted in the fifth round by the Giants back in April, has been turning some heads this spring, especially with his blazing speed. In fact, Slayton has earned his way to some first-team reps during this week’s OTAs.

This is a great step in the right direction for Slayton. The rookie receiver battled drops during rookie minicamp, but has since come on strong and fixed that issue for now.

Head coach Pat Shurmur raved about the Auburn product last week and talked about how Slayton has been improving.

“I think the guy who’s made huge improvements in my eyes has been Slayton,” Shurmur told reporters last week. “He’s done a really good job. I think we were all here during rookie minicamp when he had the yips, drops and whatnot. He’s really smoothed it out and has been making plays. He’s the first guy that comes to mind in my eyes. This time of year, it’s more about throwing and catching and less about blocking and tackling.”

As the offseason goes on, the Giants will have a lot of evaluating to do at the wide receiver position with the guys behind Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate. Along with Slayton, Corey Coleman will also factor into the equation behind the team’s top-two receivers.

The Giants need a deep threat and Slayton has the wheels to fill that role. If he can keep his drops to a minimum and continue to impress during OTAs and eventually training camp, Slayton could see a significant role in his first season in the NFL.
