Giants’ Darius Slayton, Garrett Dickerson unlikely to play vs. Cowboys

The New York Giants begin their preparations for a Week 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday, but already they appear to be shorthanded.

While the official injury report has yet to come out — it will be released later today — head coach Pat Shurmur says that rookie wide receiver Darius Slayton (groin/hamstring) and tight end Garrett Dickerson (quad) are unlikely to play on Sunday.

Slayton has been dealing with lingering injuries since early on in training camp and many thought he was likely headed to injured reserve. While he’s managed to avoid it at this point, there’s no clear timetable on a potential return.

Without Slayton, it could mean additional playing time for the newly signed Cody Core and veteran Russell Shepard.

Dickerson, meanwhile, battled his way onto the 53-man roster thanks in part to his blocking prowess, which will be sorely missed in heavy sets on Sunday. In his absence, the recently added Eric Tomlinson will back up Evan Engram and Rhett Ellison.
