Darius Slayton, a 2019 fifth-round draft pick out of Auburn by the New York Giants, broke onto the scene last year, leading Big Blue in receiving yards (740), touchdown catches (8) and yards per reception (15.4).
Slayton also caught Eli Manning’s final touchdown pass of his career, which he sees an honor.
“Eli retired, so that’s a historic ball and definitely a moment I’ll cherish forever,” Slayton told the New York Post. “I’m glad he was blessed enough to play 16 years.”
The Giants are hoping that Slayton has many more touchdown grabs in his future. Slayton himself is working hard to make sure he builds on his strong rookie season.
“I’m focusing on the little things, trying to grow my game mentally and physically,” Slayton said. “From day one when we came in with the rookies, Daniel and I stayed after some days to get some extra reps in whenever he wanted to throw. All of that helped our case when the season came.”
Slayton is the key to the Giants’ future at wide receiver. Golden Tate is turning 32 this summer and Sterling Shepard suffered two concussions in 2019 which could put his long-term football future in question.
