Giants’ Daniel Jones will dress against the Cowboys: ‘He’s ready to go’

When the New York Giants open their regular season against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on Sunday, it will be rookie Daniel Jones, not veteran Alex Tanney, who fills the role of QB2 and backs up Eli Manning.

Head coach Pat Shurmur confirmed to reporters on Thursday that Jones will not only suit up, but will be prepared in the event he’s called upon.

“He’s ready to go,” Shurmur said of Jones.

It’s unlikely the Giants will need to send Jones into the game barring something unforeseen, but the mere fact that he’ll be active shows you the sort of confidence Shurmur and the organization have in him in the event of an untimely injury to their starter.

It’s also possible Shurmur and the Giants find a way to get Jones into the game in much the same way they did with Kyle Lauletta a year ago when he entered the game as a gadget wide receiver.

Of course, the approach with Jones may slightly differ in an effort to avoid injury to their future franchise, instead possibly giving him a few reps at quarterback throughout the game based on circumstance.

If nothing else, Jones is now just a single play away from taking over under center.
