Giants’ Daniel Jones ticked off after first training camp interception

New York Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones threw his very first — and to date, only — interception of training camp on Tuesday, and to say he wasn’t happy about it would be an understatement.

While Jones kept his composure after Corey Ballentine picked him off, Pat Shurmur admitted today that the Duke product was ticked off in the aftermath — a reaction completely welcomed by the coach.

“He was pissed. So yeah, I’m good with that,” Shurmur told reporters.

Jones also addressed the interception today, attempting to take the hiccup in stride despite being obviously frustrated by it.

“I certainly wasn’t happy about it. It’s going to happen. That’s part of playing the game,” Jones said. “Corey made a heck of a play there, definitely something to learn for me from that. I can be sooner making that decision, probably put the ball a little higher in the back of the end zone. Definitely not happy about it, but something to learn.

“I can get fired up on the field. I think usually I have pretty good control of that, I think I do on the field also. I think when something like that happens, it’s going to get you going a little bit. As long as it doesn’t take away from how you are playing and your decision-making, I think that’s natural.”

If Jones continues at the pace he’s set early in camp, there won’t be too many moments of getting fired up on the field. Despite his obvious ups and downs in comparison to the steady Eli Manning, Jones has largely avoided costly mistakes.
