Giants’ Daniel Jones doesn’t want Pat Shurmur fired

New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur could be on his way out of town in the coming days, but that has little to do with input from his players, who appear to be very much in his corner and fighting to the bitter end.

Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones is one of those players, telling reporters on Thursday that he does not want to see Shurmur fired, while also heavily crediting the coach for his development.

“I think he’s a great coach,” Jones said. “How he’s coached me has been very important for my development, so I am very grateful to have the opportunity to work with him.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with coach Shurmur and I think he’s done a whole lot for my development and my growth. He’s been great for me.”

Although Jones said Shurmur’s job status is “well above” his pay grade, he did express an additional desire to see the coach return in 2020, bluntly saying “yes” when asked if he’d like to see Shurmur retained.

Whether or not Jones (and Saquon Barkley, for that matter) gets his wish remains to be seen, but he can certainly help Shurmur with a quality game and a potential victory in Week 17, giving the team three straight wins to close out the season.
