SAN FRANCISCO _ Buster Posey's season will be coming to an end this weekend. His Giants teammates probably wish theirs was too in the wake of Friday's meltdown at China Basin.
After the Giants dropped a 7-6 decision to the Texas Rangers in 10 innings at AT&T Park, Posey told reporters that he will be traveling to Vail, Colo., after the series to undergo a surgical procedure on his right hip Monday.
The news comes in the wake of a 4-6 road trip that all but ended the Giants season earlier this week. Friday's heartbreaking loss ended up being an exclamation point.
"You don't want to say you're out of it until you're out of it," Posey said. "But unfortunately, where we are, I think it makes the most sense to get this taken care of now."
Dr. Marc Philippon will perform the surgery to repair the labrum in Posey's right hip. The Giants catcher said his recovery will take six to eight months, which means he could miss the first month of the 2019 season as Opening Day is a little more than seven months away on March 28, 2019.
Posey is optimistic that the surgery will allow him to regain the form that produced six All-Star Game appearances, the 2012 National League batting title and the 2012 National League MVP. The nine-year veteran is currently sitting on full-season career lows in home runs (five), RBIs (40), batting average (.284), OPS (.739) and slugging percentage (.382).
"If it goes smoothly, hopefully with no hiccups, I'll be ready to go next Opening Day," the Giants catcher said.
