It was inevitable and now it’s a thing of the past — the New York Giants and rookie offensive tackle Andrew Thomas have agreed to terms on a four-year contract, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The deal will include a $21.2 million signing bonus with all $32.345 million fully guaranteed.
In desperate need of a franchise left tackle, the Giants selected Thomas No. 4 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was widely considered the most “pro-ready” of all offensive tackles, which is saying something considering how deep the pool was.
Although Thomas projects as the team’s long-term answer at left tackle, there is no guarantee he starts the season there. Currently, the Giants have veteran Nate Solder penciled in on the left side, although first-year head coach Joe Judge has not committed to the alignment.
With his position uncertain entering training camp, Thomas says he’s prepared himself to play on either side of the line.
“For me, it’s kind of like a switch in my head that kind of goes off because the plays and everything are the same, the technique is the same, but everything is flipped to the other side,” Thomas told Giants.com. “You might be using your right leg for something that would maybe be different on the left side. It’s just getting used to that. But once I get a few repetitions at it, it’s just natural.”
So long as Thomas passes his physical, he could officially sign his contract as early as Monday night.
