Giants add Mike Remmers: Contract details

The New York Giants and veteran tackle Mike Remmers agreed to a contract in principle late on Saturday night, effectively establishing the team’s offensive line for the 2019 regular season.

The addition of Remmers has been anticipated for well over a month now, so the news came as little surprise. However, there was still the question of cost.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the deal is for one year and could be worth up to $4 million based on potential incentives.

Given that Remmers is coming off of an undisclosed injury that’s kept him out all spring, the one-year prove-it deal seems fitting. It provides the Giants an out should things fall apart, while leaving Remmers an opportunity to cash in and earn a second contract if he’s able to rebound and anchor the right side of the team’s line.

With roughly $15.7 million in salary cap space prior to the signing, the Giants will be left with about $11.7 million to finish signing their 2019 NFL Draft class and whatever other free agents they may opt to target.

Now that the compensatory pick formula no longer factors in, expected general manager Dave Gettleman & Co. to be aggressive in patching any remaining roster holes.
